British gymnasts aren't known for setting the world alight when they compete, but South Cheshire gymnast Beth Tweddle has made history by becoming the first Briton to win a gold medal at the World Championships.
The 21 year old started her gymnastics career at a gym in Crewe before joining a club in Liverpool. And on Friday night (October 20, 2006), she won the uneven bars competition in Aarhus, Denmark.
"All my hard work has finally paid off," said Tweddle. "A lot of people told me it would come - but I didn't think it ever actually would. It hasn't sunk in yet."
Beth has previously savoured success with a bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim (USA) and a silver medal at the 2004 European Championships in Amsterdam. She was also British Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2002.
She now has a European Championship and World Championships to look forward to in 2007, and the Olympic Games in Beijing the following year.
