10 December 2013STREATHAM GETS SNEAK PREVIEW OF SKATE STAR'S TV SHOW

Beth Tweddle MBE, the Dancing on Ice star and Olympic medallist was guest of honour at the official opening of Streatham’s brand new ice and leisure centre yesterday (10th December) almost two years to the day that the old, much loved rink closed.

Beth and dance partner Daniel Whiston treated guests to a sneak preview of their skating routine which will be broadcast to millions in an American TV ice show spectacular , before running a masterclass with local skaters. Beth also watched a display by Clapham’s Gemstones gymnastic club much to the delight of the youngsters.

The Leader of Lambeth council, Cllr Lib Peck unveiled a plaque to mark the opening and said: ” I’m proud and delighted – this is a very special day – not just for Streatham but South London . It’s a testament to the patience, perseverance and partnership of everyone here today. It’s also a great example of how Lambeth is bucking the trend – across the country, leisure facilities are being cut or closed but this is the second brand new centre to open in Lambeth , with West Norwood due to open next spring.”

Local MP Chuka Umunna and the Mayor of Lambeth Cllr Mark Bennett joined local people, skating, swimming and ice hockey club members and representatives from Tesco and Vinci for tours of the centre and watched demonstrations by local children.
The £26m leisure centre project has been jointly funded by Lambeth Council and Tesco and provides:

• An ice rink with 1,000 rink side seats for spectators, skaters, ice hockey players and officials
• A six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool
• A four court sports hall
• A 13-metre teaching pool
• 100 gym stations

The overall development incorporates the new supermarket, over 250 new homes and will have provided almost a thousand jobs during the construction phase and afterwards, including over 300 at the Tesco store, including around 70 long term unemployed people
