26 June 2015Beth set for Ballymena date
A Ballymena-based sports club is preparaing for one of the most eagerly-awaited days in its history this weekend.
Valdez Gymnastics Club is getting ready to roll out the welcome mat for none other than former Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle.
The 30-year-old, who won gold at the London Olympics in 2012, will officially open the club’s superb new facility at Woodside Road this Saturday.
The club moved to the new base earlier this year, having previously been based in Coleraine, and has a strong membership within the Ballymena area.
She will present medals to the intermediate and advanced participants in the club’s annual club championships which were held last weekend (pictured).
Beth will also carry out a question and answer session with club members and will have a ‘meet and greet’ with members and their parents.
Valdez members will also receive useful tips and advice on training from Tweddle, the most successful British gymnast in the history of the sport.
She won three world championships, six European championships and seven British championships, as well as competing in three Olympic Games, before announcing her retirement from the sport in 2013.
Club members have been busy designing welcome messages and drawings for Beth, while the committee has also been busy putting the finishing touches in place for the big day.
