Bridlington’s most talented young sports stars got the chance to meet Olympic hero Beth Tweddle as a reward for their work at school.

Britain’s most successful-ever gymnast was the special guest at the the School Sport Partnership’s 10th annual Sports Awards.

Pupils from Headlands, Bridlington, Martongate and Burlington Schools were among those recognised for their achievements at the presentation evening at Longcroft School in Beverley.

The School Sport Partnership is run from Bridlington School and works with more than 50 schools across the East Riding.

Tweddle, a former world champion who won bronze at the London Olympics in 2012, helped to hand out awards in categories including outstanding achievement in PE, outstanding achievement in sport, leadership and volunteering, out of school hours learning, outstanding school team and sports personality

Tweddle told the Bridlington youngsters: “If anyone tells you you can’t achieve your dream, ignore them and strive to achieve it.

“Now I have retired I am enjoying travelling the country and seeing how grassroots schemes are helping to produce the next Olympians to take part at Rio 2016.”
