11 December 2015Beth opens new Aldi store in Broughton

More than 160 eager customers queued to check out Aldi’s new supermarket in Broughton Shopping Park – with one waiting in line for nearly 24 hours in a bid to bag himself a prize-winning golden ticket.

The first 100 people in the queue received a golden envelope to claim a prize.

To make sure they got a ticket many braved the cold and rain for hours – with several sleeping outside the store overnight.

Bob Barton from Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, was first in line after camping outside from 11.35am yesterday.

Sat on a deck chair wearing plenty of layers, he told the Chronicle: “I’ve been here since 11.35am yesterday to make sure I was first in the queue.

“I’m hoping to win a good prize from my golden ticket."

Next in line were Jed Cadeias from Birkenhead and Niki Farrugia from Wirral and Nathan Cassidy-Grace from Buckley.

Jed said: “We got here at about 9.30pm last night and have stayed here overnight. We haven’t really managed to get any sleep apart from a couple of hours.”

But it was lucky Nathan who bagged the star prize of a 40” HD television, with others winning tablets, smartphones, bottles of bubbly and gift packs.

Bunbury's Beth Tweddle said: “I’m really excited to be opening Aldi’s new store in Broughton, especially because it is so close to my hometown.”

The store ran a ‘design an Aldi store poster competition’ with local schools.

Winning posters, designed by Zara Williams and Keira Edwards from Broughton Primary School were unveiled today.

The opening comes just a week after the supermarket giant opened a store in Buckley.

Aldi store manager, Steven Woods said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our customers who queued from the early hours of the morning to join in with our Golden Ticket event.

“We were really pleased with the turnout and the team and I enjoyed meeting our new customers."
