4 June 2013Olympic medal winner meets Wigan pupils

The three-time Olympian visited Standish Community High School to supports its Comenius project, which aims to broaden pupils’ horizons and boost their skills for their future lives and careers.

The project involves four exchanges which will take place across a two year period, during which the host country will teach the visitors about their local and national sports, demonstrating how sport unites nations.

As Standish Community High School was the designated hosts for the second exchange, 25 students from years eight to 10 hosted the visiting students from Germany, France and Italy, and pupils organised a meet and greet with Beth Tweddle and Wigan’s mayor Myra Whiteside.

Teacher Samantha Owen said: “Students were welcomed at school with a reception from the Mayor of Wigan and Beth Tweddle, who both came to offer their support for our project.

“Each of the visitors gave a speech and Beth was a real inspiration to our students and signed autographs and had photographs.”
